Skype's twenty-year run ended inside Microsoft Teams

A named successor, not an open-ended wind-down

On 28 February 2025 Microsoft announced that Skype would be retired on 5 May 2025, a little over two decades after it launched. Unlike several entries in this batch, the announcement did not describe features being absorbed piecemeal into another product; it named a direct successor, Teams Free, and described a specific sign-in path: users could log into Teams with existing Skype credentials and have contacts and chats appear automatically. Microsoft also said interoperability would continue during the transition, so Skype and Teams users could still reach each other before the May cut-off.

What automatic migration covers, and what it does not

Microsoft's support page for the retirement, a living document as retrieved on 16 September 2026, sets out a longer and more granular timeline than the announcement alone suggests: subscriptions stopped auto-renewing from 3 April 2025, the retirement itself landed on 5 May 2025, and the page describes further dates since, including a 2026 deadline for exporting or deleting Skype data through a dedicated export portal and a later date on which deletion begins. The page is also specific about a limitation the announcement does not mention: chats between Skype users and Teams accounts tied to a work or school organisation will not migrate automatically, so anyone in that situation needs the export option rather than the sign-in shortcut.

A long tail after the headline date

The retirement date is not the end of the story the support page tells. Skype credit, numbers ported to other carriers, and data export all carry their own separate deadlines extending well past May 2025, which means “Skype is retired” understates how long the wind-down administration actually runs. Treating the headline date as the only date worth tracking would miss the export portal's later closure, after which Microsoft states deletion proceeds regardless of whether a user has acted.

Skype's closure is unusual in this batch for how much structure Microsoft built around it: a named successor, a credentials shortcut, and a multi-year tail of export deadlines. That structure is worth noting precisely because it is not guaranteed; other retirements in this set offered far less.
