OpenAI priced ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month

A stated price for priority access

On 1 February 2023, OpenAI announced ChatGPT Plus, a subscription priced at $20 a month. The announcement promised general access to ChatGPT even during peak times, faster responses, and priority access to new features, while stating that free access to ChatGPT would continue. No specific model upgrade was promised at launch; GPT-4 did not arrive until the following month. The $20 figure is worth treating as a dated record of what a fee bought on that day, not as a description of what $20 buys now.

Who it was for, and how the mechanism worked

The plan targeted individual users frustrated by capacity limits on a free, heavily used consumer product. Subscribing did not change the underlying product tier so much as change queue priority and response speed during demand spikes. That distinction matters: a subscription sold on access and speed is a different proposition from one sold on a smarter model, even when both wear the same name and price for a period. A buyer signing up on launch day was paying to keep using the same underlying product more reliably, not to unlock a different one.

The friction, and what changed later

OpenAI's own current support article, as retrieved on 16 September 2026, still lists Plus at $20 a month, but the plan now includes voice conversations, image generation, file uploads and deep-research tools, and it warns that usage caps such as message limits can apply during high demand. More tellingly, OpenAI's pricing page now shows Plus sitting in the middle of a four-tier ladder of Free, Go, Plus and Pro, rather than at the top. The number on the announcement survived; its position in the lineup, and what it is being compared against, did not. A reader encountering the $20 figure today needs to know which of those two things is being described.

• Is a quoted price buying priority access, or a specific model and feature set that could be repositioned later?
• What happens to a mid-tier plan if a cheaper or more expensive tier launches around it?
• What usage caps currently apply, and how are they enforced when demand is high?

A launch-day price is a fact about that day. Reading it as a current rate, without checking what else has been added above or below it, risks treating a historical record as a live rate card.
