A flat bundle becomes a per-seat charge
In September 2024, Canva moved its Teams plan from a flat small-group bundle to per-seat pricing, close to $10 a month or $100 a year per person with a three-seat minimum, according to contemporaneous reporting that cites a Canva spokesperson attributing the change to an expanded product experience, including the generative AI tools added under Magic Studio, after four years of unchanged pricing. For a five-person team on the old bundle, accounts describe the change pushing an annual bill from roughly $120 to $180 up to around $500 once discounts lapsed. This is reported detail rather than a page Canva still publishes for the plan in question, since the plan itself has since closed to new customers.
Who it affected, and the partial reversal that followed
Small studios, freelancers and nonprofits already on the legacy Teams bundle bore the increase directly at renewal. Canva's own Pricing Promise post, published after visible backlash, describes reinstating original pricing specifically for early Canva Teams adopters' existing team size, while discontinuing only the separate practice of letting them add up to four extra seats at no charge. The same post commits to five things going forward: keeping an affordable free tier, continuing to add features, giving at least 60 days' notice before future price changes, pricing fairly by region, and avoiding hidden fees.
The friction: the plan this episode was about no longer exists for new buyers
Canva's help centre, as retrieved on 16 September 2026, states plainly that Canva Teams is no longer available for new sign-ups or upgrades; existing subscribers keep their current plan and pricing unless they switch or cancel. A buyer today is quoted Canva Business instead, a different plan with its own terms, so a like-for-like comparison against the 2024 figures is no longer possible from Canva's current pages alone.
- Is the plan you are being quoted a current, open plan, or a legacy one being wound down like Teams was?
- Does the 60-day notice promise apply to a contract you already hold?
- If the price rise was attributed mainly to generative AI features, does your team use them enough to justify it?
A sharp price rise followed by a partial, publicly announced reversal is still a record of both events. Reading only the reversal, without the original figures, misses why Canva felt the need to make the promise at all.
